Summer in Cauterets is perfect for enjoying the mountains with your dog: shaded forests, fresh valleys and breathtaking Pyrenean views. However, some areas are subject to strict regulations, especially inside the Pyrenees National Park.

Here is our selection of summer walks accessible with your four-legged companion.

Pont d’Espagne – A protected area

Located in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, Pont d’Espagne is subject to strict regulations.

Dogs are only allowed:

  • around the Plateau du Clot, on both riverbanks, on a leash,

  • and at Lake Gaube, provided you use the chairlift and keep your dog on a leash.

👉 Beyond Lake Gaube, dogs are not allowed.

Cirque du Lys – Panoramic mountain walks

Accessible by gondola lift and chairlift from the village, the Cirque du Lys offers spectacular views over the Pyrenees.

Dogs are allowed on the lifts and on the ridge area, on a leash only. Access is limited to the trails leading to Lake Ilhéou and Col d’Ilhéou.

  • Lake Ilhéou: around 3 hours round trip

  • Col d’Ilhéou: around 1h30 round trip

La Fruitière Valley – Fresh air and nature

About 6 km from Cauterets, La Fruitière Valley is one of the coolest and most pleasant summer walks.

Dogs are allowed on a leash up to Lake Estom.

👉 Beyond the lake, dogs are not permitted.

Reine Hortense – Views over the village

Starting directly from Cauterets, this walk quickly reaches beautiful viewpoints over the village and surrounding mountains.

⏱️ Around 1h20 to the upper viewpoint

🐶 Dogs allowed

Ferme Igau & Ferme Basque

These walks offer shaded forest paths and lovely panoramic views over Cauterets.

The climb to Ferme Basque is fairly steep but enjoyable thanks to the wooded sections.

⏱️ Around 2h30 round trip

🐶 Dogs allowed on a leash

Cambasque – For more active walkers

Located just outside the village, Cambasque offers a more challenging hike on rocky paths.

⚠️ In summer, remember to bring enough water for both you and your dog.

⏱️ Around 3h to 3h30 round trip

🐶 Dogs allowed on a leash

Le Lys Tip – Summer in the mountains ☀️🐾

Even in the mountains, summer temperatures can rise quickly. Start early in the morning, bring water for your dog and avoid exposed trails during hot afternoons.

Hôtel Le Lys: dog friendly all year round 🐶

At Hôtel Le Lys, your four-legged companions are welcome all year round. Bowls, feeding mats and a small cushion are provided to make their stay comfortable too.

🐾 Book your dog friendly stay in Cauterets and enjoy the mountains together.
